Carrasco Perez had claimed to be pregnant and she may have been. At least one news site indicates that she had terminated a pregnancy recently. Regardless, she continued to report being pregnant. She spotted Velazquez Thomas at the local social services office and befriended the pregnant woman. She later invited Velazquez Thomas to attend her baby shower.
When Carrasco Perez decided that it was time to ‘give birth’, she invited Velazquez Thomas to visit. However, the pregnant woman brought her toddler and Carrasco Perez eliminated this potential witness by offering to have a neighbor babysit. In reality, the child was simply abandoned on the street, to be rescued later. Carrasco Perez strangled the Velazquez Thomas, and then broke her neck before cutting out the fetus.
Carrasco Perez called her family and reported that she had given birth, but refused to allow anyone to go to the room where the corpse was hidden.
At hospital, medical staff assessed that she had not given birth recently. Her relatives searched her house when she was at the hospital and found the victim’s body.
Carrasco Perez confessed to the crime, indicating that she was afraid her husband would leave her.
