Leung used an online childcare forum to locate a pregnant woman and invited her to come over for free supplies for a newborn. Lee arrived expecting to obtain baby bottles and a newborn bed. Leung strangled her into unconsciousness and then sliced into her body to extract Lee’s fetus. Shortly thereafter, Leung’s husband arrived home, saw the situation and contacted the police. Leung initially claimed that Lee had injured herself with a knife while cutting cookies.
While Lee survived, the 37 week old survived only 6 months, secondary to irreversible brain damage from the attack while in utero.
During the investigation, Leung changed her story multiple times, often contradicting herself. She eventually confessed to the crime. At one point, she blamed the victim for ‘showing off’ her pregnancy, and described herself as ‘jealous’. Leung also claimed that she only picked up a knife after Lee had struck out in self-defense while Leung was strangling her, claiming that the crude caesarean was not planned.
Police found that Leung had made multiple internet searches for ‘caesarean’, ‘delivery at home’, ‘birth certificate’, ‘chloroform’, ‘causing coma’ in the days before the attack.
The courts ordered a psychological evaluation of Leung and diagnosed her as having a “disturbed personality marked by jealousy for which she can be calculating, dishonest, and going to extremes to get what she wanted”. A psychiatrist noted that “her accounts on what has happened seem to be carefully tailored according to her needs at different times and situations”.
