Sarah Brady went to Katherine Smith’s home in good faith, expecting to pick up a package accidentally sent to Smith’s address.  Smith had contacted Brady, but lied and identified herself as “Sarah Brody”, then claimed that they were both using the same online baby registry. Smith claimed that an item meant for Brady had come to her, and invited Brady over to pick it up.  

Smith attacked Brady with a knife and Brady fought back and eventually stabbed Smith three times in an act of self-defense. 

Katherine Smith had told friends and family that she was pregnant and she wore maternity clothes but the autopsy revealed that she was not pregnant (and apparently never had been).  Friends reported that Smith had repeatedly changed the supposed due date for her pregnancy, and had showed off an ultrasound of a pregnancy with twins. 

One of Smith’s previous jobs was as a nanny.
