Olivera Jardim needed a newborn in order to make good on the lies she had been telling, that she was pregnant.  She was familiar with Ferreira Melo, as they lived in the same area.  On social media, Olivera Jardim offered to give Ferreira Melo a baby item if she came to visit.  

After killing Ferreira Melo, Olivera Jardim pushed her corpse under a bed and called her neighbors for assistance, claiming to have just given birth.  When Olivera Jardim was brought to the hospital, she initially refused an examination but eventually allowed one. The medical staff were able to ascertain that she had not recently given birth.
