Fagundes’ boyfriend  had threatened to leave her, but stayed, because he thought she was pregnant. In reality, she had miscarried but continued to claim to be pregnant.  She was, however, acquainted with a young woman in her 3rd trimester, and intentionally befriended Barcelos Silva. She went so far as to accompany the pregnant woman to medical visits, in order to steal her sonogram, and pass it off as her own. 

She eventually invited Barcelos Silva over to visit. Fagundes gave victim beverages with high doses of tranquilizers so she passed out before being suffocated. 

When Fagundes brought newborn to the hospital, the staff were suspicious because it did not appear that she had recently given birth; they contacted the authorities.  Meanwhile, Fagundes’ own 14 year old son found the corpse of Barcelos Silva and called the police. 

Fagundes confessed to the crime, reporting that she had been planning it while also researching how to perform a caesarean section. 

She later changed her story and claimed that her boyfriend had helped plan the killing and helped removed Barcelos Silva’s body from the house.
