Deramous spotted Teka Adams at a homeless shelter, and contacted her sometime later, claiming to be from a company that assisted homeless pregnant women; she stated that she had obtained Adams’ name via a referral by the shelter staff.  She offered Adams a ride to a storage facility in order to obtain baby supplies. Instead, Deramous brought Adams to her own apartment.

Deramous’ 17 year old son helped bind Adams’ hands behind her back and Deramous told the pregnant woman “You’re strong, you can handle what I’m going to do to you”.   Deramous cut into Adams’ but stopped before completing the crude caesarean.

Adams managed to escape despite the fact that her placenta and intestines were exposed. She was found bleeding in the apartment lot by neighbors who called the police.   Deramous and her son fled but were captured.

Deramous claimed that Adams had agreed to sell the infant for $5,000, and that she had only bound Adams’ hands to prevent her from stealing the money. She claimed to not remember attempting to perform a caesarean section on Adams.   Deramous initially claimed to be Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI).

Deramous eventually pled guilty to 1st degree assault and acknowledged that the prosecutors had enough evidence to also convict her of false imprisonment.
