Darci Pierce faked being pregnant, wearing maternity clothes and setting up a nursery in the home she shared with her husband.  He reported thought she was due to have labor induced on the day Pierce committed her crime. Pierce kidnapped Cindy Ray as Ray left a Prenatal clinic, using a toy 9-millimeter Ruger pistol.  Pierce then drove Ray to a rural area.  Pierce then strangled Ray with a pregnancy monitoring belt and cut the fetus from her body using the key to her vehicle.   Pierce went to the hospital and claimed to have given birth en route but the medical staff became suspicious when Pierce refused to be examined.  She demanded a birth certificate but her husband refused to let her leave.  The hospital staff noted that the newborn’s head was too round if it had just experienced a vaginal birth.  Pierce eventually agreed to be examined but demanded that the MDs not inform her husband.  She told the MD that the baby was from a Surrogate and that Pierce had paid $10,000.  Pierce could not name the midwife who had delivered the baby, or explain how she had $10,000.  The police were contacted and Pierce eventually confessed, focusing only on herself rather than the victim, the infant, or her husband “I killed her, My mother is going to hate me”.

Pierce was adopted as a baby, reportedly hated her parents and moved out prior to graduating high school.  In 1986, she took maternity leave and pay from her job, started wearing maternity clothes, but records indicate that the pregnancy test at her MD was negative. She continued to claim to be pregnant for 14  months.   Pierce claimed to have multiple personalities and threatened suicide during her trial.  She was convicted of 1st degree murder, kidnapping, and child abuse.

Cindy Ray’s husband learned that his wife was murdered the same day he met his daughter, Amelia.
