Lane had been claiming to be pregnant for 14 months and her boyfriend threatened to leave her for lying. Lane used Craigslist to find a pregnant woman. She offered free maternity clothes and Wilkins responded to ask if they were still available.  Lane gave her address, and Wilkins came to look at the maternity clothes.   Lane hit Wilkins over the head, and once she was unconscious, Lane cut out Wilkin’s fetus, leaving Wilkins to bleed to death

When Lane’s boyfriend arrived, she claimed to have given birth at home. The baby, however, did not show signs of life, and he drove Lane and the infant to the local hospital. The medical staff could not save the baby, and Lane initially refused a medical assessment.  The physicians were later able to ascertain that Lane had not recently given birth. 

Wilkins later awoke, found her phone, and managed to call emergency services. She was taken to the same hospital as the one where Lane and her boyfriend brought Wilkin’s infant.

Lane initially claimed self-defense, saying that Wilkins had attacked her, that she acted in self-defense, and then performed the crude caesarean section to ‘save’ the baby after she thought Wilkins was dead.   At no time did she express remorse. 

One news site reported that Lane had a 3rd child who drowned at age 19 months in what ruled an accident per the police.
